Selecting the right weighing system for the house

Installation and calibration determine data quality

Even a well-designed scale can deliver poor results when installed in the wrong location. The platform needs a stable base, correct leveling, and enough clear approach space for normal bird access. It should not be placed where water lines drip, litter builds up excessively, or traffic patterns create constant interference.

Calibration should be completed at commissioning and checked according to the farm's maintenance program. Teams should verify zero stability, inspect the platform for debris or mechanical binding, and confirm that recorded weights remain credible against manual reference weights. If the daily curve changes sharply, first determine whether the flock changed or the equipment did.

Data review is part of calibration in practice. An unusual increase in the number of readings, a sudden reduction in scale visits, or repeated outlier values can signal a physical issue before it becomes a management error. Simple alarms and trend displays help operators see these conditions quickly.

Weight information becomes more valuable when it is available with feed, climate, and house-status data. A breeder flock that misses weight target may have a feed allocation issue, but it may also be responding to heat stress, poor air quality, uneven temperature, water availability, or a mechanical fault in the feeding line.
